If you have ever been in a real severe storm, then you know what it feels like to wonder if you are going to live to see another day. So then how is praising Him in the storm possible?
My Storm Experience
It was about 2 years ago when I was traveling on the East Coast of Canada, and the city I was visiting had a hurricane come through it. It was a real eerie feeling – the news and media were telling everyone to get ready for the storm. People like us, tourists, were walking around not believing what we were hearing because there was no sign of a storm. There were no dark clouds; it was not even windy. The sun was shining and it felt like just another beautiful day in the city.
BUT…just like had been predicted, the clouds came, the rain started and soon it was coming down in torrents and the wind began to gust and uproot trees and buildings. There was a whole lot of damage. The lights went out, the power went off, and suddenly we were in the dark!
“Hurricane Dorian transitioned from a Category 2 hurricane to a post-tropical storm as it arrived. That transition spread the damaging winds even wider from the center of the storm. In the end, more than half a million people in the region, 400,000 in Nova Scotia where I was, were left without power.” (CBC News)
I know some storms are a lot more severe than this one, but I got a glimpse of the devastation that a storm is capable of.
What Does Praising Him In The Storm Mean To You?
Maybe you lived through a severe lightning and thunderstorm or a hail storm, maybe a windstorm or even a tornado, or maybe you’ve experienced living through a hurricane like I did, but it kept you on edge of your seat as you wondered if you would live to see the next morning. How do you Praise God when it feels like you’re all alone? Is praising Him in the storm possible when you’re terrified and worried for your life?
There are so many kinds of storms ranging from natural disasters to personal storms, such as in our relationships or storms in our work life or finances, or maybe we have a storm going on with our health.
Maybe your storm is completely different from what I’m describing here and your storm is raging in your mind and thoughts. Maybe you have experienced the death of a loved one, maybe you’ve gone through a stressful divorce or the loss of a job, or a childhood trauma. And maybe it’s just been one thing after the next like a total domino effect of difficulties that feels like one great big giant storm. Your first thought is probably not….praising Him in the storm.

How To Praise Him In The Storms Of Life
The way we begin to do this is to just start praising God even if we don’t feel like it. God knows our hearts and our thoughts before we have them, so He knows how we feel. God knows about every storm we go through and He wants to help us through them. The Bible says that God works All things together for our good:
All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
This means the storms too!
So when we start praising Him even when we don’t feel like it, it turns our focus back to God, our creator, our healer, our comforter, and our friend. We can tell him every intimate detail and every thought we have because he loves us unconditionally and won’t reject us for being real. God wants us to open our hearts and praise Him in the storm and surrender our all to Him.
One of the ways I like to praise Him in the storms of life is to be grateful. I actually use gratitude affirmations daily to help me. I wrote a blog post that you should read, titled 30 Gratitude Affirmations That Can Change Your Life!
Another way I praise Him in the storm is by listening to music. A great song about praising Him in the storm is called, “Praise Him” by Hillsong. Listen to the song below:
Here are the lyrics to a song that help me Praise Him in the Storm and I think will help you begin to Praise Him in the Storm too. If you would like to listen to the song on Youtube, here is the link to listen to Hillsong singing “Praise Him.”
