When is the last time you thought to yourself “I want to be thinner”… or “I want to be skinny”… Or “Oh how I wish”…
If you are anything like me…you have thought this a million times or more! However, I discovered the true secret…and I want to challenge you with this secret too. I challenge you to learn to love who you are right now before you do anything else. If you don’t love yourself now, you will not love who you are when you are thinner or skinnier.
I Challenge You To Love Who You Are Right Now
God calls us to give thanks and to Love ourselves.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.
Mark 12: 30-31
We are called to love God with all of our heart, and with everything within us (our mind, soul and body). We are then called to love our neighbor as ourselves. This means we are to love ourselves too!!!
So when we are constantly wanting to be like someone or wishing ourselves to look or act a different way or to be something other than who we are, we are not really loving ourselves, are we?
This does not mean that God wants us to stay unhealthy or overweight, and it does not mean God is not in favor of us losing some weight, but what it does mean is that we need to love ourselves the way we are right now! When we truly love ourselves, we will want to set our minds to getting healthier and treating our bodies like a temple, which God also calls us to do.
Treat Your Body Like A Temple
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)
God wants us to treat our body like a temple, not a trash can, and when we do treat and nourish our body with the healthy foods that God made for us to enjoy, we will reap the benefits of treating our bodies well. This is a form of loving ourselves too 🙂
You will no longer have to say…I want to be thinner! I believe this means that when we decide to treat our bodies like a temple and use the qualities God equips us with (like self-control, discipline, wisdom, and discernment), then we will start to become healthier. We’ll make wise choices for our bodies and we will lose the extra pounds, all while loving ourselves the way God calls us to. We will reap what we sow!
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Galations 6:7 (ESV)
“I Want To Be Thinner” Thoughts Don’t Make You Happier
Have you ever thought that if you could just be “skinny or thinner,” then you would be happy?
When we are wishing for something that we are not, we must bring our focus back to God and how he made us – in His image. Our identity is in Christ, not in our weight. God loves us for who we are right now and He wants us to love ourselves for who we are right now too.
We have 2 great blog posts about this… check them out here:
If you decide to get healthy, lose weight and become thinner, God will not love you more. He loves you unconditionally right now, the way you are now! Isn’t that the most amazing thought? Isn’t it just so freeing?
When we have this freeing feeling, then the thought – “I want to be thinner!” becomes less important. No matter how often you think this and how much you wish for it, this wishful thought will not help you lose weight. But once we are free, we can refocus and begin to love the journey forward. We do actually have to take action – maybe it’s going to be baby steps, but in order to release the pounds or shed the weight, we need to do something different. There must be a change.
The other aspect about thinking that being thinner will make us happier is that often there is an issue that lies beneath the surface. Being skinny or thin does not instantly make us happy. You may think that when you finally fit into those clothes in your closet again, you will be happy. The truth is that after you get into those clothes and look in the mirror, yes! For one minute you may feel proud and happy. But oh how quickly you will realize that it doesn’t make you any happier.
Our Joy Comes From The Lord
We may think that our happiness or sadness comes from our size, but we know deep down this is a lie. Our joy comes from the Lord and with living according to His will for our lives. We find satisfaction and joy in serving Him and by living out our purpose that God has called us to.
If you are saying “I want to be thinner!” then you know that you need to change something up. Maybe you need to invite God into your weight loss journey. Maybe you need to get some professional help to get free from an addiction to food. Or maybe you need to call out for an accountability partner.
Maybe you need some support from a community of like-minded women, and maybe you just need to get connected with the Weigh Down Lifestyle for support. Maybe all you need is to start with the basics and get some real nutrition into your body, and just maybe… just maybe you need to stop saying – “I want to be thinner!” It’s time now to love yourself and focus on your health.
Finding Freedom With Food
Once we get to the real issues in our lives, the focus on wanting to be thinner fades and the focus changes to health and loving ourselves the way God wants us to. We know that we can find freedom with food and take back the control that food has had over our lives in the past. With God in the journey, we can be overcomers and we can treat our bodies like a temple. We can stop wishing and actually find victory.
God gives us love, joy and peace in every circumstance if we ask for it. So maybe… just maybe this is your time to stop saying “I want to be thinner!”
