Do you struggle with temptation? Maybe you are answering this question with an immediate “YES,” or you may feel that you don’t have a big struggle with temptation. The good news is that there are bible verses about resisting temptation, and we can use these to overcome our temptations.
I do know that the Devil roars about the land seeking those he can devour, and he knows where to tempt you because each one of us has a weakness. So in order to resist temptation, you must know where your weakness lies.
Sometimes women struggle with the temptation to overeat your favorite foods. Maybe you struggle with anger, pornography or maybe it’s a temptation to spend too much money on frivolous things. Maybe your temptations are around jealousy or maybe it’s a struggle with being tempted to compare yourself with another person.
Temptations have a variety of avenues, and each of us are tempted by the devil at different times in our lives. Even Christ was tempted by the devil.
Jesus Was Tempted
Jesus was hungry after fasting and the devil tempted Him to turn stones into bread. He was then tempted, by the devil, to throw himself from the highest point of the temple and command angels to catch him.
Then finally, one last time, Jesus was tempted by being offered all the kingdoms of the world in return for worshipping the devil.
Jesus had the power and the victory over His temptations, and he promises that we have a way of escape as well. It’s important to know that we can resist temptation and there are many verses in the bible surrounding the topic of resisting temptation.
God Provides Us With A Way Out
God does not allow the devil to tempt us above what we are able, so let’s claim this promise and begin to resist the devil and the temptations in which we find ourselves. He gives us a way of escape. God provides us with a way out…we may just have to open our eyes to look for the escape hatch.
Here is a list of Bible verses that will help you when you are finding yourself tempted, and I pray that you can focus on God’s promises and find your way out. These verses all revolve around the topic of resisting temptation.
Remember to access God’s word before you fall prey to the devil’s schemes. Being tempted is not a sin; it is acting on the temptation that is falling short and our downfall. Let’s be the Overcomer that God intends us to be.
Take these verses and hide them in your heart so that at the right time, you have the words to fight against the enemy. The words of scripture are like a double edged sword; they will pierce your heart and give you cause to resist the devil, as well as cause the devil to flee.
I would like to encourage you to pick one or two verses immediately that resonate with you and memorize them. First read them, then write them down, and then post them around your house on sticky notes until they are in your mind and come to you easily when you are tempted. This is your way of escape!
Bible Verses About Resisting Temptation
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
James 1:13-15
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Matthew 6:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
James 1:14-15
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Galatians 5:16-17
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.
2 Corinthians 10:4
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
Psalm 119:11
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:10-11
How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
Psalm 119:9
But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?
Genesis 39:8-9
I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?
Job 31:1
If you love Me, keep My commandments.

But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’
Matthew 4:10
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews 2:14-18
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
